CINEMA PLAN GETS GO AHEAD

Extensive building work to transform the old Cannon cinema into a place of worship will begin in June.

The Jesus Army has been given the green light to re-open the 1930s art-deco building as a worship, social and care centre.

The cinema, which is a grade two listed building, is one of the few remaining examples of the prolific architect William R Glen.

John Campbell, the church's director of communications, said: 'In practical terms it means we can now progress to the next stage of the project.'

'What that means to us is one hurdle crossed on the way to getting the Jesus Centre up and running. We're glad it's happened.'

'It's intended to be something that will be of value to people. We will be able to function better.'

'We now are waiting for tenders from selected building contractors. Work should start by June and be finished within six to nine months.'

'Our intention is to offer a valuable service to many people in Northampton.'

'We are expecting this to become an attractive venue that will enhance this part of town.'

Initial plans for the project were rejected twice by planners but the church got the go-ahead after an appeal.

And last week, borough council planners gave detailed conversion plans the thumbs up.

A report given to members of the committee stated: 'The centre will provide substantial worship, meeting and dining areas.'

'Other facilities will include treatment areas, offices, computer rooms, kitchen/servery and laundry.
